Why I Started Building an Income Around Travel
There are some moments in life that completely change the way you think about security.
For me, it was when my husband and I both lost our jobs at the same time.
It was one of the most frightening and difficult periods of our lives. Suddenly, the income we had relied on was gone, but the bills were still there. We found ourselves in a position where we couldn’t afford to keep up with everything and had to move back in with family.
I am incredibly grateful that we had family to turn to, but that didn’t make the experience easy. Losing our jobs, our income and our independence all at once was awful. It felt as though the life we had been building had been taken out of our hands, and we had very little control over what happened next.
That experience stayed with me.
I realised how quickly everything could change
Like so many people, I had always believed that working hard and having a job meant having security. But when we both lost our jobs, I realised that a salary is only secure for as long as somebody else decides that job is there.
You can be hardworking, loyal and committed, and circumstances outside your control can still change everything. I never wanted to feel that powerless again. I knew I needed to build something of my own, something that wasn’t completely controlled by another person, one employer, or one decision that I had no say in.
I wanted an income where the effort I put in could make a difference to the outcome, and where I had a greater say in the direction my life took.
That was a huge part of why I started building an income around travel.
It was never about replacing my career
I think people sometimes assume that starting something alongside a job means you must hate your career or be desperate to leave it.
That was never my motivation.
I have worked hard for my career, and I am proud of it. I didn’t start building an income around travel because I wanted to throw everything else away. I started because I never wanted one job to be the only thing standing between my family and financial difficulty again.
For me, it has always been about having a backup.
It is about building an additional stream of income alongside the work I already do. It is about knowing that if life changes unexpectedly, I have something else I can lean on.
It is about creating options so that one person’s decision cannot leave us with nothing overnight.
That peace of mind matters more to me than I can properly explain.
Why travel made sense for me
Travel has been part of so many of the happiest moments in my life. It brings people together, gives us something to look forward to and creates memories that stay with us long after we come home.
Building around something I already loved felt natural. It gave me the opportunity to help other people experience more of the world while creating an additional income for myself and my family.
But the reason behind it goes much deeper than simply loving holidays.
I was building something that belonged to me. The time, energy and effort I chose to put into it were mine. I could develop my skills, grow my confidence and work towards goals that I had set for myself.
I wasn’t waiting for somebody else to give me a promotion, approve a pay rise or decide what I was capable of.
Of course, building your own income stream doesn’t mean every result is guaranteed or that everything is within your control. It takes work, consistency and patience. But it has given me far more ownership over my future than relying on one salary ever could.
I wanted choices, not an escape plan
This was never about running away from my life.
It was about protecting it.
I wanted to know that if something unexpected happened, we would be in a stronger position than we had been before. I wanted to create a financial cushion, more breathing room and more choices for our future.
I didn’t want to lie awake wondering how we would pay the next bill. I didn’t want us to lose our independence again because somebody else had decided our jobs were no longer there.
Most of all, I never wanted to feel as though our entire future rested on things we couldn’t control.
So I decided to start building something alongside my career, one step at a time.
Building something bigger than a backup
What began as a need for security has grown into so much more.
It has helped me become more confident, meet brilliant people and build a community around encouragement, possibility and shared ambition.
It has shown me that creating an additional income doesn’t have to mean giving up the career or life you already have. It can fit alongside them and give you another layer of support.
I also know I am not the only person who worries about what would happen if their circumstances suddenly changed. The rising cost of living, redundancy, illness or a change at home can affect any of us.
Wanting a backup doesn’t mean you are being negative. Sometimes it simply means you have experienced how unpredictable life can be and want to feel better prepared.
That is why I now love helping other people explore whether building something around travel could fit into their lives too.
Taking back a little more control
I cannot guarantee that life will never throw another difficult chapter at us. None of us can.
What I can do is make sure I am not relying entirely on one income, one employer or one path. I can keep learning, keep building and keep creating options for myself and my family.
That is what this has always been about for me.
Not replacing my career. Not chasing an overnight success story. Not pretending that difficult things will never happen again.
It is about building the backup we once desperately needed. It is about turning a painful experience into a reason to create something more secure.
And it is about knowing that the effort I put in today can help give us more choice, confidence and peace of mind tomorrow.
